Everyone has a story to tell, and a new community project is inviting locals to share theirs as part of the 2026 MidCoast Festival of Stories.
Leaning In is a free six-week creative project combining photography and storytelling to help participants explore the people, places and everyday moments that hold meaning in their lives.
Each participant will receive a disposable camera and be encouraged to capture photographs of things that matter to them.
Over six weekly workshops at the Forster Civic Centre, participants will come together to explore their photographs and develop the stories behind them through creative activities, discussion and guidance.
MidCoast Council’s Executive Manager Public Spaces, Liam Bulley, said Leaning In was about creating opportunities for people to connect through the simple act of sharing stories.
“Everyone has experiences, memories and moments that have helped shape who they are, and sometimes the most meaningful stories can be found in everyday life,” Mr Bulley said.
“Leaning In provides a welcoming and creative way for people to explore those stories, meet others and build confidence along the way.
“You don’t need to consider yourself a photographer or a storyteller to take part. It’s about having a go, making connections and recognising that your story is worth sharing.”
No photography or public speaking experience is required, with participants supported to take part in a way that feels comfortable for them.
The project will culminate in a relaxed public presentation as part of the MidCoast Festival of Stories, where participants will present their photo stories through a slideshow and live narration.
Leaning In is open to adults aged 18 and over and is free to participate.
Workshops will be held at the Forster Civic Centre from 11am to 2pm each Saturday from 10 October, with participants required to attend all six sessions. The final presentation will be held on Saturday 14 November from 3pm to 5pm.
Registrations close Sunday 27 September.
