Environment Protection Authority Victoria’s (EPA) work toward the remediation of the illegal waste dump site 15 kilometres south of Kaniva at Lemon Springs continues with the release to the market of a Request for Proposal for the next stage of works.
“This is a large, complex and isolated site. Remediation will take a while and will occur in several stages,” said EPA Program Manager Julian Bull.
“The first stage was conducted in late 2019 when a partial excavation of the three bigger underground dump locations was completed. This helped us understand the type and volume of waste likely to be buried at the site,” said Julian.
“EPA is in the process of securing a suitably qualified contractor to undertake the next stage of remediation, which should be completed over two months later this year. All waste excavated during these works will be sampled and taken to an appropriately licensed facility for disposal.”
Drone inspections using Ground Penetrating Radar and on ground inspections have now revealed up to 30 areas of interest on the 1,400 acre property.
“EPA believes the polluter should pay for the cost of cleaning up and we will hold them to account,” said Julian.
