Lidar speed devices returned to service, South Australia

South Australia Police will resume using hand-held speed detection analysers, commonly called Lidar, from 12.01am tomorrow (Friday 14 December).

The devices were temporarily withdrawn from use on 29 November as a result of a legal issue applicable to court prosecutions.

Following amendments to the Road Traffic Act 1961, which become law at 12.01am tomorrow morning, SA Police will resume operational use of Lidars.

When they were withdrawn from use, the community were advised that any person who had been issued with an expiation notice from a police officer who they believed was using a Lidar device, and had not yet paid that, could make an inquiry by emailing details to [email protected] or write to SAPOL addressing the request to Expiation Notice Branch, GPO Box 2019, Adelaide, SA 5001.

About 580 inquiries have been lodged with SAPOL and these are now being managed.
