On Monday night Lithgow Council endorsed community consultation on the concept of a new kerbside collection service (‘green bin’) for organics. The service would consist of a new, weekly 240L kerbside bin for the collection of food organics and garden organics (commonly known as ‘FOGO’).
Lithgow City Council’s Mayor Maree Stratham said, “I am incredibly impressed with the waste services provided by this Council. The proposed FOGO service will further increase these service levels and offer considerable environmental benefits. I encourage everyone to get involved through the consultation process.”
Organic wastes break down in landfill and are a significant contributor to methane emissions – a greenhouse gas 25 times more harmful than carbon dioxide. A FOGO collection takes organic material from households such as food scraps, garden cuttings, grass clippings and prunings so they can be recycled and converted to compost instead of being sent to landfill.
The consultation process will commence shortly, and residents will have the opportunity to provide their feedback on the proposed additional service during this process.
