With a hypothetical mission to uncover the identity of a company insider who leaked valuable trade secrets, a group of curious young minds will experience first-hand what a career in cyber security looks like.
In partnership with the NSW Government and industry partner GuardWare, the University of Newcastle is hosting a Cyber Industry Experience event to inspire up-and-coming talent to consider a job in the industry.
Global Innovation Chair in Cybersecurity from the University of Newcastle, Professor Vijay Varadharajan said the event will give young people, aged 14 to 16, a unique opportunity to work with the innovative industry partner, GuardWare.
Under the mentorship of University of Newcastle computing students and GuardWare staff, participants will work with simulated data in their hunt for the culprit.
Participants will also hear about local research and innovation from the University’s Cyber Security Research Centre and how these could translate into marketable products and startup companies. Professor Varadharajan said it is time that Australia started to have its own big tech – developed its own trustworthy cyber products and exported them to the world.
With the digital era and increasing threat of data breaches, hacking and other cyber offences, there is a high and ongoing demand for skilled cyber specialists. Professor Varadharajan said inspiring the next generation into cyber security roles was crucial to protect individuals, businesses, organisations and the Government.
