Residents in the Wagga Wagga Local Government Area can now recycle unwanted clothing, shoes and household textiles, with Textile Recycling drop-off collection points available at Council’s Gregadoo Waste Management Centre (GWMC) and seven rural transfer stations.
GWMC has established a permanent Textile Recycling drop-off collection point to help residents keep unwanted textiles out of landfill, with additional drop-off points available at Mangoplah, Collingullie, Currawarna, Galore, Humula, Tarcutta and Uranquinty rural transfer stations.
Resource Recovery Facilities Manager Andrea Baldwin said the dedicated textile recycling drop-off service aims to reduce pressure on local charities by giving residents another option to responsibly dispose of items that have reached the end of their useful life.
“Accepted items include clothing, shoes, linen, blankets, towels, and other clean household items,” Ms Baldwin said.
“The textiles we collect will be sorted, with items in good condition to be donated for resale. Items that cannot be worn will be taken by a textile recycling contractor and repurposed as cleaning rags or recycled into new products such as rugs and floormats.”
Textile recycling is accepted for free through the Waste Transfer Station at GWMC which is open seven days a week.

A textile recycling trial at GWMC in 2025 saw one tonne of textiles dropped off in just five days, demonstrating the eagerness of our residents to find solutions for end-of-life textiles.
Of the 98,887 tonnes of clothing are donated to charities in NSW each year, only 15 per cent is suitable for resale through shopfronts.
A further 13,844 tonnes of material donated to charities ends up in landfill each year. Items left beside charity bins are unlikely to be reused or recycled, particularly if they become wet and damaged*.
Items that currently cannot be accepted through Textile Recycling include doonas, pillows and cushions, electric blankets / wearable electronics, large bags, mats or carpet, soft toys and textile offcuts, wet or damp items.
