Locomotive And Vehicle Crash – Tunbridge

At 0049 hrs on Thursday the 20th of August 2020 a collision occurred at a level crossing at John Street Tunbridge between a Holden Commodore and a north bound Tas Rail Locomotive pulling 30 wagons of freight.

Minor damage was caused to the train and vehicle and no persons were injured.

Investigations have established that the Holden Commodore was travelling east on John Street Oatlands and stopped at the level crossing as the locomotive approached. The driver decided to cross the tracks and failed to give way to the locomotive which clipped the right rear corner of the vehicle. The vehicle and driver failed to remain at the scene but were later located at an address in Tunbridge by police.

A 41 year old Tunbridge man was taken in to custody by police and has been charged with Exceeding .05, Unlicensed, Fail to remain at the scene of a crash, and Fail to give way at a Level Crossing. He has been bailed to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on the 25th January 2021.

Investigations by Tas Rail at the scene were completed and the Locomotive later continued on its journey north. Tas Rail will complete a report for the Office of National Rail Safety Regulator. (ONRSR)
