The winners of the inaugural Lord Mayoral Awards were announced at a special event held at Marrara today, coinciding with the International Day of People with a Disability.

The Awards aim to recognise people who advocate for the rights and wellbeing of people with a disability. Award winners have a disability themselves and advocate for change at schools, the workplace and in the community.

The 2019 winners are;

  • The Champion Award – Paul ‘Macca’ McKenzie
    • with highly commended Michael Burge
  • The Rising Star Award – Nadia Knight
    • With highly commended Romone Lewin.

The Awards are an initiative of the DiversAbility Collective, which includes representatives from the across the disability sector, support agencies, the NT Government and City of Darwin.

Sara Braines-Mead from Integrated disAbility Action Inc said she was delighted to recognise the efforts of people in the community who work to ensure people living with a disability are given opportunities to live full and rewarding lives.

“The Lord Mayoral Awards have seen well deserving people in our community get the recognition they deserve for their hard work and selflessness.”

“Our community is richer because of people like Macca, Nadia, Michael and Romone” Mrs Braines-Mead said.

Acting Lord Mayor Simon Niblock said the Awards provide a platform for people in our community to get recognition for contributions that may otherwise go unnoticed.

“These people are champions of our community,” said Acting Lord Mayor, “and I’m delighted the Awards can act as a catalyst to improve services and infrastructure for people living with a disability.”
