The temporary green waste recovery site at Lou Litster Park will be closed from Saturday (10 February).
More than 9500 tonnes of green waste has been taken to the site by residents and contractors to help with the clean-up efforts following Ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily.
Local Recovery and Resilience Group chair Mark Molachino said people will still be able to take their green waste for free to Townsville City Council’s waste transfer stations.
“I want to thank the community for utilising Lou Litster Park over the last 10 days,” Cr Molachino said.
“The site was set up as another access point for locals to get rid of green waste and relieve some of the burden at some of the other sites across the city.
“We have started to see traffic drop off to the site, so we can look to return to normal operations.
“Ex-TC Kirrily brought down a lot of trees and branches and recovery crews are continuing to pick up green waste along the kerbside.
“We are asking the community to be patient as there is a lot of work for recovery crews to get through, with 1860km of road verges to clear across the city.
“If you still have green waste that needs collecting, then please place it on the kerb and away from items like power poles, street signs and electrical boxes.
“It could take up to five weeks for crews to finish the job, as they clear both sides of the roads.
“If you have access to a ute, trailer or vehicle that can carry green waste then I encourage you to take it for free to one of Council’s waste transfer stations at Hervey Range, Stuart, Toomulla, Bluewater or Magnetic Island.”
