LUNAR SEA: Celebrate Lunar New Year at the Australian National Maritime Museum

The Australian National Maritime Museum, in partnership with the China Cultural Centre marks Lunar New year with Lunar Sea, a program of free, fun events for all ages, every weekend from February 10.

Celebrate the Year of the Dragon with language tours and trails every weekend of the Lunar New Year Festival culminating in a full weekend of captivating cultural performances and creative family-friendly workshops on February 24-25.

Lunar Sea Activity Trail & Lucky Dip Prizes (10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 February, 10am-4pm)

Adventure around the museum with our Lunar Sea activity trail- inspired by Lunar animals and constellations that feature in the museum’s collection. Complete your trail to receive a lucky dip pack filled with creative activities.

Mandarin Language Tours (10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 February, 11am and 1.30pm)

Experience the fascinating maritime history of Australia with your expert Mandarin-speaking guide. Tours encompass the museum’s collection and core galleries around navigation, immigration, and Indigenous culture.

Culture Carnival (24 February)

Immerse yourself in the delights of Lunar New Year and the profound heritage of the ancient Chinese city Xi’an in a day of performances, workshops and displays.

Enjoy beautiful performances of traditional instruments, opera, and dance, join experienced artists to learn Chinese calligraphy, painting and incense art, treat your tastebuds to delicious traditional cuisine, dress up for a photo in gorgeous Tang Dynasty costumes, and marvel at displays of intangible cultural heritage from the ancient capital Xi’an.

Lunar Maker Space (25 February, 11am-3pm)

Open from 11am-3pm, join in creative Lunar New Year inspired artmaking including ink-painting, lantern making and dragon shadow puppets in these family friendly workshops.

Lunar Performances (25 February – 11.30am, 1.30pm, 2.30pm)

Where synchronised dance and drumbeats meet the sea. Enjoy engaging cultural performances including traditional Dragon dance, martial arts demonstrations, visiting Dragon boat paddlers, and roving characters.
