Council will undertake dry notch maintenance at Shoalhaven Heads tomorrow, reducing the amount of dry sand at the Shoalhaven River entrance.
On Wednesday and Thursday (24-25 June), ideal conditions will allow an excavator on site to cut a shallow groove (or notch) in the dry sand. This is a routine entrance management process set out in Council’s Shoalhaven River Entrance Management Policy. Its purpose is to allow quicker and easier access to open the entrance of the river in the event of a flood.
All activities will be carried out in accordance with Council’s Shoalhaven River Entrance Management Policy (2025) and corresponding Crown Land Licence.
The works will involve relocating sand from the entrance area to nourish the sand dunes to the north of the entrance.
Although there are resident and migratory shorebirds present, the shorebird nesting season has ended and there are no active nesting sites within the immediate works footprint. Council will continue to work with National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to minimise disturbance.
The public is advised to stay outside the work area and keep away from the machinery during the works.
