Work has started on a major upgrade to the Lake Cullulleraine Community Complex, enhancing facilities for local footballers, netballers and the entire Millewa community.

New, separate toilet and shower facilities catering for men’s and women’s footballers, a bigger canteen located at the netball court end of the building, and new netball amenities are among the improvements planned.

Council has engaged Irymple-based Wilkie Building Contractors to complete the renovation, which is being funded through the Federal Government’s Drought Communities Program for community infrastructure. The project is one of three which residents of the Millewa-Carwarp area prioritised to boost the economy and wellbeing of the community in the wake of ongoing drought conditions.

Portfolio Councillor for Sport and Recreation Mark Eckel said the Lake Cullulleraine Community Complex was a vital hub for sport, social and community events in the Millewa.

“Reconfiguring the internal layout of the Complex will make it a safer, more comfortable and accessible space for everyone to use,” Cr Eckel said.

“Earlier this month we saw the Millewa League host an incredibly successful grand final event there and these renovations will only add to that next season.”

Both Meringur and Werrimull Football Netball Clubs currently play home games at Lake Cullulleraine, with five junior and senior netball teams, plus men’s and women’s football competing during the season. The Clubs have been closely involved in the design process for the refurbishment.

Werrimull Football Netball Club Vice President and Millewa farmer James O’Day said the renovations would bring the tired facility up to standard and support the growing number of women and girls playing netball and football in the Millewa.

“Women and girls currently make up more than half of our member base so it’s essential that we cater for their needs. This in turn will help us to encourage even more to play sport and get involved,” Mr O’Day said.

“We’re very excited about this project starting and looking forward to using the renovated space in our 2024 season.”

The refurbishment project is scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the 2024 Millewa football and netball season. The building will be closed to the public whilst work is underway.
