Think! Road Safety Footy Express services will be back on the road again for the 2021 AFL season, getting football fans to and from Adelaide Oval for free.
The first match to be held at Adelaide Oval for the 2021 AFL season will be between the Adelaide Crows and Geelong on Saturday, 20 March, with Port Adelaide hosting its first home match the following week against Essendon on Saturday, 27 March.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Corey Wingard, said with Adelaide Oval capacity boosted to allow crowds of 40,000 people, Adelaide Metro will continue to provide full dedicated bus, train and tram services for the AFL season to assist with social distancing efforts.
“The Marshall Liberal Government is encouraging footy fans to Think! Road Safety by leaving their cars at home this footy season and travelling to and from Adelaide Oval with the Think! Road Safety Footy Express services for free,” the Minister said.
“We know many South Australians have been doing it tough over the past year and that’s why we will again be running the Think! Road Safety Footy Express this season to ensure free travel for footy fans.
“All footy fans are itching for the 2021 season to get underway and we know the atmosphere at Adelaide Oval will be amazing as always.
“Get your transport information in real time before you head to the game by using our new dedicated Footy Express journey planner, to be launched in the coming weeks, to find your closest service and best travel times.”
Minister for Police and Road Safety, Vincent Tarzia, said encouraged all South Australians to utilise the free transport options over the 2021 AFL season.
“The Think! Road Safety Footy Express service is a fantastic initiative that delivers South Australians to the doorstep of Adelaide Oval safe and sound,” Minister Tarzia said.
“Free return transport is ready to go at the final siren, so please don’t get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking – there’s no excuse for putting lives at risk.
“Lives lost and serious injuries on our roads are preventable but we must all play our part and Think! Road Safety.”
As previously announced, there will be full and partial closures of the Gawler rail line throughout the year, as part of the Gawler Rail Electrification Project.
Substitute buses will operate as closely to Gawler train services as possible.
Cleaning schedules have been increased across all public transport modes and extra cleaning crews are being used across the network.
Passengers are encouraged to maintain social distancing wherever possible and use their best judgement and wait for the following service if they do not feel as though there is adequate space or if instructed to do so.
Passengers are also reminded not to travel on public transport if they are feeling unwell.
