A major accessibility upgrade at Hampton foreshore is helping more people move through the area and enjoy the beach, just in time for summer.
Officially opened on Wednesday 14 October, the $3.5million project, fully funded by Bayside City Council, has delivered a new accessible ramp on the southern side of Hampton Life Saving Club, a renewed foreshore playground, a new car park and improved shared pathways.
The accessible parking can be accessed near 45 Beach Road.
Designed with a universal access consultant, the ramp is wide enough for two wheelchairs to pass and includes rest areas for people with other mobility needs.
Its staged gradients meet safety requirements while navigating the 7.2 metre cliff face.
The project closes a longstanding gap in accessible infrastructure between Beach Road and the water.
Working in the coastal environment required careful risk management, including confirming site levels before equipment was fabricated.
This planning helped to deliver infrastructure tailored to the unique coastal setting.
Part of Bayside’s Foreshore Management Plan, the project supports Council’s commitment to inclusive, liveable, and sustainable spaces.
This project aligns with Goal 1 of the Council Plan 2025-2029 – Our People; Goal 4 of our Health and Inclusion Plan 2025-2029 – Accessible and Inclusive Community; and contributes to Theme 8 of our Bayside 2050 Community Vision – Access and Inclusion.
