Residents, shoppers, traders and motorists will enjoy improved safety and traffic-flow along one of Adelaide’s most popular suburban shopping strips following a long-awaited upgrade to a busy intersection.
A new scramble crossing at the intersection of The Parade and George Street in Norwood, as well as two new dedicated right hand turning lanes, will deliver great benefits to all pedestrians and motorists who travel through the precinct.
The Marshall Liberal Government committed $330,000 towards the project, a commitment made at the last election and is now delivered.
Local Member for Dunstan and Premier Steven Marshall said the much-needed upgrade is a massive win for Norwood traders and residents.
“We’ve got some huge infrastructure projects underway across the state as part of our record $17.9 billion infrastructure blitz but this is an example of a smaller project that will have huge benefits for our local community,” Premier Marshall said.
“As a local resident I’m well aware of the traffic headache this intersection used to create and that’s why at the last election we committed to fixing it.
“By installing a scramble crossing and dedicated right hand turn lanes we ensure continuing accessibility for shoppers and residents. It’s a win-win solution.”
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said the new dedicated right hand turn lanes ensure safer and easier access for local businesses, residents and the wider community.
“The installation of a signalised scramble crossing means pedestrians will now be able to cross in any direction at the same time, making the area more pedestrian friendly,” Minister Wingard said.
“Anything that improves pedestrian access and safety at the intersection can only be good for local businesses.”
Co-owner of Norwood Place Spero Tsapaliaris said the intersection improvements addressed a longstanding problem and would be warmly embraced by the community.
“It’s a common sense solution and is a great example of what can be achieved when the community, business and government work together,” he said.
Australasian Property Developments Managing Director Pep Rocca, whose company is undertaking the Coles redevelopment, said the project represented a win-win.
“It will ensure safe and easy access to the major car parks servicing The Parade retail precinct, while improving safety for local residents,” Mr Rocca said.
Upgrades to line marking and signalling were also completed as part of the project.
The works were undertaken by Parkade Pty Ltd and 166 The Parade Norwood on behalf of the Department for Infrastructure and Transport.
