Man arrested after sparks fly from stolen vehicle on three rims in Melbourne’s southeast

Operation Trinity officers have arrested a man following an extended follow throughout Melbourne’s south-east this morning.

Police first spotted the Holden Commodore utility bearing false registration plates on Huntingdale Road in Chadstone about 12.50am.

Officers attempted to intercept the vehicle after it came to a stop on Robert Street.

The vehicle took off at a fast rate of speed, with police on Robert Street using stop sticks to successfully deflating the vehicle’s tyres.

It will be alleged the vehicle travelled through the suburbs of Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Monash, Mulgrave, Rowville and Wheelers Hill at speeds of up to 200km/h and at stages on the wrong side of the road.

After travelling an extensive distance on three rims, the vehicle came to a stop on Nullawil Street in Springvale where the offender jumped fences and was arrested by responding officers at a property on Charleston Street.

The 31-year-old Seaford man remains in custody and will be interviewed.

A backpack containing housebreaking implements and an on-board diagnostics device was located nearby and seized by police.

The Holden Commodore was stolen in Prahran on 5 October.

Operation Trinity is solely dedicated to preventing and responding to burglaries and car thefts – running from dusk to dawn across Melbourne each night.

The operation sees uniform police supported by a range of specialist units, including the Dog Squad, Public Order Response and Air Wing.

While arrests remain high, the primary aim of Operation Trinity is to prevent people having their homes broken into in the first place.

To achieve this, Trinity units conduct a range of disruption activities, including saturating suburbs based on intelligence, intercepting thousands of vehicles each month, and nightly patrols around the homes of Victoria’s most prolific burglars and youth gang members.

These offenders are largely opportunistic by nature – seeking easy access points through unlocked doors and windows.

As such, police implore the community to take simple steps such as locking all doors and windows on your home and car.
