Man charged after a clandestine drug lab explosion in San Souci – Drug & Firearms Squad

Drug & Firearms Squad detectives have charged a man following the discovery of a clandestine drug lab in Sydney’s south under Strike Force Bambulla.

About 12pm on Thursday 26 October 2023, emergency services were called to a granny flat in Sans Souci following reports of an explosion.

On arrival, officers attached to St George Police Area Command – with assistance from NSW Fire & Rescue – found a clandestine drug lab and were told a male resident had allegedly fled the scene with an injury to his face.

A perimeter was established, and search commenced with assistance from PolAir and the Dog Squad; however, the male could not be located.

Assistance was sought from Drug and Firearms Squad Chemical Operations Unit, Technical and Forensic Support Unit, and Fire & Rescue NSW HAZMAT team to dismantle the lab.

A total of 5kg of methylamphetamine, 12kg of ephedrine and other chemicals consistent with the manufacture of prohibited drugs were located and seized to undergo further forensic examination.

State Crime Command’s Drug and Firearms Squad established Strike Force Bumballa to investigate further.

Following further inquiries, about 9am yesterday (Wednesday 1 November 2023), a 45-year-old man was arrested at Parramatta Police Station, where he was charged with four offences including manufacture prohibited drug >= large commercial quantity, two counts of supply prohibited drug >= large commercial quantity and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear before Parramatta Local Court today (Thursday 2 November 2023).
