A man has been charged after a police vehicle was allegedly rammed near Newcastle last night.
About 9.30pm (Tuesday 9 September 2026), officers attached to Newcastle City Police District attempted to stop a vehicle on Henry Street, Merewether.
Police will allege that in the cul-de-sac, the vehicle conducted a u-turn before driving at and colliding with the police vehicle.
The vehicle came to a stop at the intersection of Macquarie Street, where the driver ran from the scene.
The 23-year-old man was arrested in nearby bushland a short time later.
During a search of the vehicle, police allegedly located a replica firearm, methylamphetamine, and items believed to be stolen.
He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with 14 offences,
- Use etc offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention etc
- Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
- Not give particulars to other driver
- Custody of knife in public place
- Take and drive conveyance without consent of owner
- Possess unregistered unauthorised pistol in public place
- Possess prohibited drug
- Goods in personal custody suspected stolen (six counts), and
- Learner not accompanied by driver/police officer/tester.
He was refused bail to appear before Bail Division Court 2 today (Wednesday 9 September 2026), where he was formally refused bail to appear before Newcastle Local Court on Monday 14 September 2026.
