Man charged over arson and break-in at Gawler units

A man has been arrested following an incident at a block of residential units in Gawler overnight.

Police and fire crews were called to a property on High Street just after 2am on Saturday 20 June following reports of a fire.

It will be alleged that the suspect smashed a front window of a unit and deliberately set fire to the window frame. The fire was quickly extinguished, resulting in only minor damage. No injuries were reported.

The suspect then allegedly forced entry into another unit at the property and was located by police hiding inside a bedroom. No one was inside that unit at the time.

A 35-year-old man of no fixed place of abode was arrested and charged with arson and serious criminal trespass. He was refused police bail and will appear in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Monday 22 June.

Crime scene investigators attended and examined the scene.

Police reassure the community that this appears to be an isolated incident.
