Man charged with domestic and traffic offences – Lake Illawarra

A man has been charged with serious domestic violence and traffic-related offences occurring south of Sydney.

About 2.20pm yesterday (Tuesday 21 November 2023), a 23-year-old man allegedly coerced a 22-year-old woman known to him into his vehicle at Lake Illawarra.

A witness contacted Triple 0 where officers from Lake Illawarra Police District commenced a co-ordinated response to locate the vehicle.

Whilst travelling south along Windang Road, Windang, a short time later officers attempted to stop the vehicle where it will be alleged that the vehicle failed to comply, and a pursuit was initiated.

For safety reasons the pursuit was terminated.

The vehicle was again sighted by police whilst travelling along Cumberland Street, Berkeley. After failing to stop a second time a pursuit commenced that was also terminated for safety reasons.

A third pursuit of the vehicle was commenced after it was sighted by officers in the Wollongong CBD.

It will be alleged that the vehicle stopped in the car park of a business along Kenny Street, Wollongong, where the man ran from the scene but was arrested by officers after a search of the area.

Police will further allege that when arrested the man was found to be in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine.

He was taken to Wollongong Police Station.

Inquiries established that the vehicle had been stolen from Albion Park Rail the previous day (Monday 20 November 2023) and that the man had been disqualified from 2022 until 2025.

The man was charged with 12 offences:

  • Assault occasioning bodily harm (DV) x 2
  • Larceny
  • Take and drive conveyance without consent of owner
  • Take/detain person with intent to obtain advantage (DV)
  • Common assault
  • Stalk/intimidate fear physical etc harm (domestic)
  • Drive conveyance taken without consent of owner
  • Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period
  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously
  • Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
  • Possess prohibited drug

He was refused bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court today (Wednesday 22 November 2023) where he was remanded in custody to reappear at the same court on Wednesday 17 January 2023.

There were no reports of any person being injured or property being damaged.
