Man charged with theft of vehicle and camper trailer from Cumberland River

Torquay Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man with allegedly stealing a vehicle and camper trailer with two people and two dogs on board, from Cumberland River earlier this month.

Investigators were told the vehicle with a camper trailer and annexe was parked at a rest stop on Great Ocean Road when it was allegedly stolen on 20 August.

A 20-year-old Wallan woman was dragged a short distance inside the annexe of the camper trailer before falling onto the road, causing a minor injury.

A 20-year-old Wallan man remained inside the attached camper trailer until the vehicle broke down in Lorne and the offender fled on foot.

One of the dogs, Pablo, was located by some nearby campers about 5.45pm and returned to his worried owners.

Detectives arrested a 19-year-old man on 26 August, and he was charged with two counts of reckless conduct endangering life, recklessly causing injury, theft of motor vehicle and drive whilst disqualified.

The Avalon man was presented to Geelong Magistrates’ Court today and has been remanded to appear at the same court on 26 September 2023.
