Man critically injured during brawl, NSW

Police are appealing for information after a man was critically injured in an alleged assault in Surry Hills overnight.

About 12.35am (Saturday 9 April 2022), emergency services responded to reports of a brawl on Oxford Street, Surry Hills.

During the brawl, a 23-year-old man was allegedly punched, causing him to fall to the ground and strike his head.

Security guards nearby attempted to disperse the group, before officers from Surry Hills Police Area Command attended.

On arrival, police attempted to arrest a number of people; however, they fled the scene.

Following a short foot pursuit, three men were arrested nearby and taken to Surry Hills Police Station.

NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the injured man at the scene, before he was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital where he remains in a critical condition with significant head injuries.

All three men were charged with affray.

Two of the men – aged 19 and 20 – were refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court tomorrow (Sunday 10 April 2022).

The third man – aged 20 – was granted conditional bail, to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on 5 May 2022.

An investigation into the incident continues and police are appealing for anyone with information or who has dashcam footage of the incident, to come forward and contact Surry Hills police or Crime Stoppers.
