Man dies in hospital following alleged assault in Ashfield – Strike Force Ashlans

A man has died after he was taken to a hospital in a critical condition following an alleged assault in Sydney’s inner-west earlier this week.

Just after 3pm on Tuesday (3 March 2026), emergency services were called to Holden Street, near Liverpool Street, Ashfield, following reports of a concern for welfare.

Officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command attended and found a 54-year-old man unconscious.

He was treated by police and NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

A 38-year-old man has been charged and remains before the court.

About 4.15pm yesterday (Wednesday 4 March 2026), police were notified the 54-year-old man had died in hospital.

A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
