An investigation is underway after a driver has died and a passenger was left seriously injured following a single vehicle crash in the state’s north this morning.
About 9.50am (Thursday 24 September 2026), emergency services were called to Zara Road, near Rawsons Road, Zara, approximately 18km west of Murwillumbah, after reports a hatchback had crashed into a tree.
Officers attached to Tweed-Byron Police District attended along with NSW Ambulance paramedics who treated the driver – a man believed to be in his 80s – however, he died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.
A passenger – a 66-year-old woman – suffering serious injuries.
She was treated by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to hospital in a serious condition.
A crime scene has been established and an investigation into the circumstance surrounding the crash has commenced.
The vehicle was seized to be forensically examined.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
