Man in court over role in armed robbery at Sydney CBD jewellery store

Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives have arrested a further two men following investigations into an alleged armed robbery at a jewellery store in Sydney’s CBD earlier this year.

About 6.30pm on Thursday 19 January 2023, police will allege a 65-year-old male store owner and a 47-year-old female employee were inside a jewellery store in George Street to assist two male customers with an appointment.

A short time later, one of the customers allegedly threatened the woman with a knife, while the other man allegedly threatened the store owner and demanded access to the safe.

Both staff members were allegedly restrained before the two men fled the store.

Officers from Sydney City Police Area Command attended and initiated inquiries before the matter was referred to the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad under Strike Force Ingestre.

During the course of the investigation, strike force detectives arrested a 37-year-old man on Thursday 13 April 2023. He was charged and remains before the courts.

A second man, aged 57, was arrested in Homebush West on Saturday 22 April 2023. He was taken to Auburn Police Station and charged with aggravated robbery and deprives person of liberty, and participate criminal group contribute criminal activity

He was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Local Court on Sunday 23 April 2023, where he was formally refused bail to next appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday 29 June 2023.

Following inquiries, strike force investigators arrested a 65-year-old man at Day Street Police Station about 4.15pm yesterday (Monday 8 May 2023).

He was charged with aggravated robbery and deprives person of liberty, attempt dishonestly obtain financial advantage by deception, publish false misleading material to obtain property, and participate criminal group contribute criminal activity

Police will allege in court that the man had been involved in planning and coordinating the robbery and attempted to defraud an insurance company.

He was refused bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court today (Tuesday 9 May 2023).

Following further inquiries, detectives executed a search warrant at a unit in Canada Bay about 8am today.
