Northern Territory Police have arrested a 38-year-old man in Katherine this morning after he was incorrectly released from custody at Katherine Local Court yesterday.
About 4.30pm, the man was sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended with one month to serve, in relation to an aggravated assault and three counts of contravening a domestic violence order.
Following sentencing, the man was mistakenly released from police custody at the court.
The error was identified shortly afterwards, and an immediate police response was initiated, with Strike Force Cerberus and General Duties members deployed to locate the man.
Police reviewed CCTV and conducted enquiries into the man’s movements throughout the evening, before he was located and arrested in Katherine this morning.
Acting Superintendent Warren Scott said police acted immediately once the error was identified.
“The circumstances surrounding his incorrect release will be reviewed to understand how it occurred and ensure appropriate measures are taken.
“I want to acknowledge the work of Strike Force Cerberus and General Duties, who worked quickly to locate the man and ensure he was safely returned to custody.”
