Man sentenced for sending abusive emails to Commonwealth official

A Sydney man has been sentenced to a 12-month Community Correction Order at Parramatta Local Court for sending offensive emails to a Commonwealth official.

The AFP’s National Security Investigations (NSI) team began an investigation in May, 2026, after a series of abusive emails were sent to a Commonwealth official between February and May, 2026.

The man, 43, was arrested at a Wentworthville home on 23 June, 2026, and later pled guilty to using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence, contrary to section 474.1(1) of the Criminal Code (Cth).

He was convicted and sentenced yesterday (2 October, 2026) to three months and three days’ imprisonment (released yesterday on time served), a 12-month Community Correction Order and a 12-month Conditional Release Order, with the condition he completes 100 hours of community service.

AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett announced the establishment of NSI teams in October, 2025, to target groups and individuals causing high levels of harm to Australia’s social cohesion, including the targeting of the Jewish community.
