NESA has clarified to schools that mathematics will remain optional for students in Years 11 and 12.

In line with the implementation of Kindergarten to Year 12 Mathematics syllabuses, NESA will commence an evaluation of the HSC minimum standard.

Recognising that maths and numeracy skills must be addressed as early as possible, this evaluation will consider the effectiveness, timing and current requirements of the HSC minimum standard.

The evaluation will also put forward options to better support teachers to identify students and address potential learning gaps earlier in their high school education.

NESA will present recommendations in 2025.

More information:

As with the entire Curriculum Reform program, we will be informed by experts to best support teachers to improve their students’ learning outcomes.

We will also continue to support schools to deliver the evidence-based mathematics syllabuses, which explicitly outline the knowledge and skills students need to learn – building on foundational knowledge and concepts at each stage of learning.

New K-10 Mathematics syllabuses are now being taught in schools and Year 11 and 12 Mathematics syllabuses are set for release later this year.
