Maths tutoring program proves a positive equation

Hundreds of South Australian Year 6 students have begun receiving one on one maths tutoring as the Marshall Liberal Government’s Learning+ program gets underway.

The pilot program is seeing more than 500 students receiving tutoring in mathematics by 140 qualified teachers. Tutoring is delivered online for 30 minutes twice a week.

The pilot has begun with Year 6 students in Term 1, while Year 8 students are set to begin next term.

Through one-on-one tutoring, Learning+ aims to help students who need support by building important learning skills, understand the curriculum more deeply, accelerate learning, foster a positive attitude towards learning and develop greater self-confidence.

Education Minister John Gardner said the pilot was already seeing results.

“This new tutoring pilot is being led by qualified teachers, and we are confident this pilot is providing a boost for students who need assistance with mathematics,” said Minister Gardner.

“We want to make sure our students have every opportunity to succeed in their education and a solid understanding in mathematics is a critical skill for our children and young people to develop, particular for those pursuing a career with a STEM focus.

“Early feedback indicates that both tutors and students are enjoying the format and are very comfortable engaging online, and we are already seeing many students increasing their output and understanding of mathematics as a result of this program.

“It is fantastic to see so many schools, educators and families getting involved in this pilot, which we hope it will continue to lift educational outcomes for students across the state.

“This is also an excellent opportunity for teachers to earn more income while helping students who need support.

“Many of our educators have increased their ability to teach curriculum material in an online environment as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and teachers taking part are using these skills to complement this pilot.

“The Marshall Government is committed to delivering a world class education for our students and this pilot is another example of this.”
