Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow has announced that the Rockhampton branch of Make-A-Wish Australia will be the charity recipient for the 2019 Mayor’s Carols by Candlelight, helping children with critical illnesses at a time they need it most.

The Rockhampton volunteer branch of Make-A-Wish Australia creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses. They work in partnership with sick kids, their families and medical teams to deliver unforgettable wish experiences – like making unicorns fly, sending kids to the moon and even helping Australia’s youngest cricket captain don the baggy green.

Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow said that over the years, Rockhampton Carols by Candlelight has assisted dozens of local charities to help community members in need.

“For Carols by Candlelight this year we’ll all be doing our bit to help the Rockhampton branch of Make-A-Wish Australia to make a wish come true for local sick kids,” Mayor Strelow said.

“When a wish is realised, a child discovers that despite their situation, anything is possible,” she said.

Sally Bateman, Chief Executive Officer of Make-A-Wish Australia, said that wishes complement a child’s medical treatment, with the power to calm, distract and inspire at the time they need it most.

“Our vision is to grant the wish of every eligible child. As a trusted children’s charity with a local presence in the Rockhampton community, we rely on our generous donors, volunteers and partners to make it happen,” she said.

“All funds received will go toward granting more wishes – anything from purchasing a cubby, to a puppy who’ll offer companionship or paying for flights & accommodation for a wish child who has wished to take their family on holiday,” Sally said.

Mayor’s Carols By Candlelight concerts will be held at the following venues:

Pilbeam Theatre Wednesday 11 December at 7pm (ticketed event)

Music Bowl Saturday 14 December at 7pm (entry by donation)
