MCA statement on JSCNA final report

The minerals industry will review the Joint Standing Committee on Northern Australia’s final report into the destruction of the caves at Juukan Gorge.

The tragedy at Juukan Gorge should never have occurred.

It must never happen again.

Industry deeply values its relationships with the diverse First Nations landholders and communities with which it partners, and respects their cultures, knowledge and heritage.

The minerals industry has taken significant action over the last 17 months to improve relationships, review permits and operating plans and strengthen heritage protection practices as well as leadership accountability and oversight.

There is more to do.

Industry is also working together to support strong relationships – including driving cultural change where necessary – through a multi-year work program.

This involves:

  • Supporting strong heritage protection laws and systems
  • Increasing industry transparency and accountability
  • Improving land use agreements and their implementation
  • Further developing industry capability, systems and engagement.

Through the MCA, the minerals industry will draw on the final report as it continues to work with First Nations organisations, governments and others to further enhance sectoral capability, systems and engagement.
