Medowie’s makeover a smashing success

After 7 days of hard work, Medowie’s town centre has been transformed thanks to the people-powered 7 Day Makeover.

Medowie local Councillor Chris Doohan says the makeover has been a huge success.

“It has been an unforgettable week. More than 200 volunteers helped to transform the Medowie town centre into something we can all be proud of in 7 days. Our budget was $65,000 — donated by sponsors and Council — and we’ve managed to make some amazing improvements.

“The park next to Medowie Community Centre has been completely transformed — with a fairy garden, sensory trail and a new reading stage for the Mobile Library. Relaxed wave seating is scattered throughout the town, while artistic leaves and an 80 metre long mural show off Medowie’s creative side,” he said.

“It has been such a special experience to see Medowie’s community spirit in action. We’ve formed new friendships and we’ve worked together as a community to achieve a common goal. I can’t thank our volunteers enough for their hard work this past week!”

Creative Communities Director and placemaker David Engwicht said the makeover has been a record-breaker.

“Medowie has set a new record for the most volunteers in a single day at 201! We also set a new record for the highest number of sponsors of any town that has done a 7 Day Makeover, plus many businesses took time off to donate their services. Medowie should be so proud,” he said.

“More than anything, it’s wonderful to see everyone who has helped during the makeover come together for the launch party to celebrate the success and all that we’ve achieved!”

Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer says it’s amazing what the community of Medowie has achieved.

“Helping to makeover Medowie has been such a fantastic experience and looking around, it’s incredible what our volunteers have achieved in just a week.

“The Medowie town centre is now somewhere people will want to spend time — it’s colourful, creative and there’s plenty of places to sit and take it all in.

“I want to thank everyone who helped in any way — no matter how big or small — to make this makeover a success! The 7 Day Makeover is all about people-power and we couldn’t have done it without you.

“Medowie is the second Port Stephens town to receive a 7 Day Makeover and it has been just as rewarding as the first at Anna Bay. I certainly see the potential for community-led initiatives like this to create more people-friendly town centres across Port Stephens,” he said.

“If you haven’t been down to check out the results of the Makeover yet, go and spend some time in Medowie and enjoy the newly transformed town centre,” he added.
