Billilla Mansion will be transformed into a vibrant contemporary art destination with the opening of Melbourne Sculpture Biennale 2026: Soft Systems, running from 8 to 25 October.
As Principal Partner of Melbourne Sculpture Biennale 2026, Bayside City Council is supporting the presentation of one of Victoria’s leading contemporary visual arts events, bringing free access to contemporary art and cultural experiences to the heart of Bayside.
Following the success of its inaugural edition in 2024, the Biennale returns with Soft Systems, a thought-provoking exhibition featuring new works by 20 leading Australian artists. Presented throughout Billilla Mansion and its surrounds, the exhibition showcases sculptural, installation and site-responsive works inspired by the unique history, architecture and environment of the heritage-listed site.
Visitors will encounter works by acclaimed and emerging artists including Mikala Dwyer, Paul Yore, Lauren Berkowitz, Jenna Mayilema Lee, Kait James and Bronwyn Hack, alongside Andrew Atchison, Francis Carmody, Hannah Gartside, Mira Gojak, Naoise Halloran-Mackay, Lou Hubbard, Christopher Langton, Chris Madden, Beth Maslen, Glenda Nicholls, Nabilah Nordin, Nicholas Smith, Sebastian Temple and Isadora Vaughan.
The exhibition reinforces Bayside’s reputation as a vibrant destination for arts and culture, while providing residents and visitors with the opportunity to experience contemporary art in one of Bayside’s most significant heritage buildings.
In addition to the exhibition, visitors can enjoy a free public program of artist talks, guided tours and special events, offering opportunities to engage more deeply with the artworks, artists and ideas that shape Soft Systems.
