Ministerial Conflict of Interest Review

NT Government

In December 2023 the Territory Labor Government announced it would complete a review of Ministerial conflict of interest controls.

Today, the Government is releasing the terms of reference for the review. Even though there are a number of controls and procedures currently in place which cover Ministerial conflicts of interest, it is timely to review current practices, examine their adequacy and make recommendations to strengthen the corporate policy, practice and procedures, in order to improve Ministerial conflict of interest controls in the future and provide greater transparency to the public.

Conflict of interest is a broader issue that affects all members of Parliament, local government elected officials and public officers.

Further improvements or actions in relation to those cohorts may be progressed at a later stage. An expert in Northern Territory Government corporate governance, and retired Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Corporate and Digital Development, Ms Kathleen Robinson PSM, will undertake the Review, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of the Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet.

“We are reviewing the way Ministerial conflict of interests and declarations are registered and published in the interest of transparency and integrity. We will look at what other jurisdictions have in place. We need to do better.
