The intersection of George Street and River Street in Moonbi has reopened following extensive reconstruction works.
Along with the road and causeway being repaired, the works also included the installation of signage and guardrail as well as drainage improvements.
The works were made possible after funding was secured through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
“Restoring this connection is about more than reopening a road, it is about helping local residents, businesses and visitors move around safely and confidently again,” Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said.
“This project is another example of the Australian and NSW Governments working together through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements to help councils rebuild essential infrastructure and support community recovery,” NSW Minister for Recovery Janelle Saffin said.
The section of road in Moonbi suffered extensive damage and erosion in flood and storm events in 2022.
Tamworth Regional Council undertook design work while funding was sought, and then secured in 2025, before Stripes Civil Pty Ltd was issued the construction contract.
“This is great news for the Moonbi community with cars now able to access George Street again,” Tamworth Region Mayor Russell Webb said.
Council secured $1.45 million through the DRFA for the project which covered the full cost of the damage repair works.
