More improvements ahead for Alexandra Street

The reconstruction of Alexandra Street is set to move into its third stage shortly, with works to begin on Monday 7 September between Main Street and the highway.

Councillor for Infrastructure Tony Williams said these works will take approximately five months to complete.

“Over the last couple of years we have seen a lot of work go into the reconstruction of Alexandra Street,” said Cr Williams.

“I know that there have been some delays and disruptions as the work has been ongoing, however there is no doubt that this project has been absolutely necessary.

“These sections of Alexandra Street were well and truly in need of replacing, and this project will mean fewer delays and a better experience for drivers in the long run.

“While this next stage of work is carried out traffic will operate under a single lane closure in either direction.

“Our Civil Operations teams will be moving through stage three as quickly and as efficiently as possible, and we ask–as always–that drivers follow all instructions as they move through the area in order to ensure the safety of everyone.”

Councillor for Division 7 Donna Kirkland thanked residents for their patience while works were underway.

“Those who use this road regularly can certainly see the world of difference that stage one and two of these works have made already,” said Cr Kirkland.

“The alternative was to continue to patch up the road as it deteriorated in an attempt to save it, which would have meant longer delays and a lot more expense in the long run.

“This is a highly trafficked road that needs to be brought up to a high standard. These works will ensure the road is strong enough to last a long time.”

Previous stages of the Alexandra Street works were funded through Council, the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery Program, and the Queensland Government.
