More services for local youth with Headspace upgrades

Department of Health

Young people across the Gympie region will receive better mental health support, with an upgraded headspace service opening today.

The upgrade means local young people – aged from 12 to 25 – will now be able to access the full range of headspace services locally. This includes care in four key areas – mental health, related physical and sexual health, alcohol and other drug support, and vocational services.

headspace is a trusted model of care that is recognised by young people, their families and communities for providing youth friendly mental health support. headspace Gympie is the first of five satellite services to be upgraded to full centres, with Lake Haven (NSW), Armidale (NSW), Esperance (WA) and Port Lincoln (SA) also to be upgraded this year.

headspace Gympie first opened as a satellite service of the Maroochydore centre in July 2018 and is operated by Youturn Youth Support. The upgraded service will operate from 30 Duke Street, Gympie.

Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister, Emma McBride:

“The mental health and wellbeing of young people is an issue of major concern, especially in regional and rural areas.

“Early intervention is important to get the best possible outcomes. It can be difficult for young people to travel so local services play a crucial role.

“I encourage young people across the region to visit headspace Gympie for support with their mental health and wellbeing.”
