More social and disability housing delivered for North-West residents

Members,

Delivering safe and secure homes and supported accommodation for Tasmanians in need is a top priority for the Rockliff Liberal Government.

Housing Choices Tasmania has just completed work on a 15-unit development in East Devonport that includes10 social housing homes and five disability accommodation units.

“These homes, together with hundreds more being built or acquired through Homes Tasmania, will go a long way to easing the pressure on Housing Register applicants who are seeking a home in the North-West,” Minister Barnett said.

“We know that increasing housing supply is the best way to address our housing challenges which is why the Rockliff Liberal Government has the biggest housing plan in the state’s history – $1.5 billion to deliver 10,000 new social and affordable homes by 2032.

“These social housing units in East Devonport are an equal mix of two and three bedrooms and will provide quality homes for 10 families.

“Importantly, these units have all been built to the silver level of the Liveable Housing Design Guidelines, which ensures future flexibility and adaptability to allow the residents to remain in place longer term.

“The five disability units have been designed to meet the NDIS Supported Disability Accommodation Design Standard, which means those residents will be able to receive the level of care and support they need and deserve,” Minister Barnett said..

The Rockliff Liberal Government provided $1.35 million towards the $6 million overall construction costs for these wonderful units, which has resulted in an injection of more than $17 million into the local economy.

The Devonport City Council originally gifted the land to disability service provider Possability, which designed the supported accommodation units and worked with Housing Choices Tasmania to deliver this important development.

“This site is a great example of how all levels of government and the community service sector can work together to deliver an amazing result for our vulnerable residents,” Minister Barnett said.

“Our partnership with community housing providers, such as Housing Choices Tasmania, is delivering more properties and providing more homes for Tasmanians in need around the state” Minister Barnett said.

Housing Choices Tasmania owns and/or manages more than 2100 homes across Tasmania and they are currently building more than 100 new social housing properties across the North-West, including:

  • this 15-unit development in East Devonport;
  • a 50-unit development in Wynyard;
  • 48 new homes at West Ulverstone;
  • 16 units in Burnie, and
  • a 10-unit development at Latrobe.

Congratulations to Housing Choices Tasmania on this amazing development and we look forward to continuing to work closely with them on their current and future projects as we continue to deliver more homes for Tasmanians in need.
