More than 1000 surveys completed for Aussie Backyard Bird Count

Eleven birdwatching enthusiasts have been rewarded for their contribution to Bird Life Australia’s data with a collection of prizes from Townsville City Council and Bird Life Townsville.

The winners were chosen at random for their help collecting data as part of The Aussie Backyard Bird Count in October.

More than 820 Townsville locals registered to take part in the count, with more than 1050 surveys completed.

Community Health, Safety and Environmental Sustainability Committee chairperson Margie Ryder said it was great to see so many people get involved.

“We have such a huge range of birds here in Townsville, so it’s really important that we have data on where exactly they live and what their habits are,” Cr Ryder said.

“I’m really glad to see so many members of the community get behind The Aussie Backyard Bird Count.

“Having hundreds of responses really helps paint a better map of local birds’ habits and habitats.”

Renee Brown-Hincksman has won a brolga artwork by North Queensland artist Stephen J Oliver, while other winners have been gifted either a set of bird habitat books, a bird box, or an Australian Bird Guide.
