More than 250 people filled the streets of Wonthaggi on Saturday, marching behind the colourful Invy Horn Jam to celebrate the launch of the new public artwork Radical Women at The Union Theatre.
Created by multidisciplinary artist and sculptor Kay Abude in collaboration with local community members, Radical Women celebrates the extraordinary legacy of the Wonthaggi Miners’ Women’s Auxiliary and their leading role in keeping the community connected, supported and resilient during the 1934 Coal Strike-and for decades beyond.
As the 2026 Bass Coast Shire Council Public Art Commission, the artwork highlights the stories of the Women’s Auxiliary and their lasting impact on Wonthaggi. Their legacy is now reflected on the exterior of The Union Theatre, a longstanding cultural and historic landmark at the heart of the town
