More ways to camp make exploring NSW national parks easier |

Exploring the great outdoors and experiencing the beauty of NSW’s national parks is about to get easier for more people, with visitors now able to hire a caravan for their stay at just over four per cent of NSW national park campgrounds.

The new service will be available at 16 campgrounds and allows visitors to enjoy the comfort and convenience of a caravan holiday without the upfront cost and ongoing responsibilities of owning a caravan, such as storage, maintenance and towing.

For many families with young children, people with mobility challenges or first-time campers who want an easy caravan holiday but don’t own the equipment, the initiative offers a simple and convenient way to access the joys of camping in nature.

The service will be available at campgrounds across the Central Coast, South Coast, Southern Ranges, Sydney, Blue Mountains and Central West, helping more people experience camping in some of NSW’s most spectacular natural settings. These locations were selected because they have the facilities and occupancy available to support caravan hire and set-up.

Visitors simply book an existing caravan site through the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service booking system and then arrange hire directly with the approved supplier. The service uses existing caravan sites only and does not affect the number of sites available for tent camping.

Tent hire services will also return to The Basin campground in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. This popular option allows visitors to book a fully set-up tent and enjoy a hassle-free camping experience. This service was previously available at this site from 2015-2024.

Together, these options make it easier for people to experience NSW national parks, without the upfront cost of buying camping equipment. They provide more opportunities for short breaks, family adventures and time spent enjoying the outdoors.

While hire fees will be determined by the operator, it’s expected that hiring a caravan will cost an average of $165 per night and that tent hire at The Basin will cost an average of $380 for 2 people for a minimum of 2 nights.

These services build on existing equipment hire services that already help people take part in activities such as hiking, snow sports, kayaking and camping.

Around 1.9 million overnight stays are recorded each year across 366 campgrounds and 156 cabins and other accommodation in NSW national parks.
