The Morrison government is set to announce fast track approvals and further public money for big gas corporations to open new gas basins as part of the release of the national gas investment framework today.
The Australian Youth Climate Coalition representing tens of thousands of young people across the country are outraged and calling for an end to public subsidies for fossil fuels.
“This announcement confirms what young people already know – the Morrison Government has failed our generation on climate and would rather support their mates and donors in gas companies,” said Alex Fuller, 24, Australian Youth Climate Coalition National Director
“Young people won’t settle for Morrison’s grabbag of meaningless slogans and empty promises of action thirty years from now, while billions in public money is funneled to big polluters for climate-wrecking gas projects,” Alex said.
“Scott Morrison and Angus Taylor are using public money to line the pockets of their greedy mates in the gas industry. All the while these big fossil fuel corporations continue to profit from dangerous gas projects that our climate and communities can’t afford,” she said.
“Traditional Owners across the Beetaloo Basin and Narrabri Basin have been resisting risky gas fracking fields on their country for decades. But the Morrison Government continues to fund big gas corporations to frack Aboriginal land while Traditional Owners are saying no,” Alex said.
“The Morrison Government’s slush fund for big gas polluters could instead support our communities to thrive – through investment in renewable energy from the wind and sun and world-class public services like healthcare, housing and education.
“By investing in things that benefit our communities instead of corporate billionaires, our government can help build stronger, closer communities and bring the real climate solutions we need to life,” Alex said.
