Motorcycle Awareness Month: Choose Right Gear

Wentworth Shire

Protective motorcycle gear can reduce the risk and severity of injuries when a crash occurs.

Riders who wear appropriate protective gear are up to twice as likely to avoid hospitalisation following a crash. Protective gear should be worn on every trip, regardless of the distance or expected riding conditions.

When selecting gear, riders should consider:

  • an approved motorcycle helmet that fits correctly
  • a motorcycle jacket and pants with abrasion-resistant materials and impact protection
  • gloves that protect the knuckles and palms
  • boots that protect the feet and ankles
  • the protection, breathability and water resistance provided by each product.

MotoCAP independently assesses motorcycle jackets, pants and gloves for protection and breathability. Riders can use its ratings to compare products before purchasing new gear.

NSW learner and provisional riders should also be aware of the protective gear requirements introduced on 1 July 2026. Learner riders must wear an approved high-visibility vest or jacket, while learner, P1 and P2 riders must wear approved protective motorcycle gloves.
