A week after detecting 40 traffic offences in a one-hour traffic operation in the Hobart CBD area, police conducted a similar operation this morning and concerningly detected 50 offences.
Southern Road Policing Services detected 10 drivers using mobile phones and 40 drivers committing yellow or red-light offences.
“Today’s results show too many drivers are still choosing to ignore the rules that are designed to keep everyone safe,” said Sergeant Andy McShane.
“These offences create a real risk of serious crashes, particularly at busy city intersections where there are high volumes of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.”
“There is no excuse for using a mobile phone while driving or failing to stop safely at traffic signals. These are deliberate decisions that place other road users at risk.”
“The message from police is simple – put your phone away, pay attention to the road and obey traffic signals every time you get behind the wheel.”
Distractions such as mobile phone use significantly increase the risk of crashes, while failing to stop safely at traffic signals can have devastating consequences for road users.
Please remember you must stop at a yellow traffic light if it’s safe to do so before the stop line or intersection.
