Work is continuing in Mullumbimby’s CBD this week to clean and reline damaged gravity sewer mains to improve sewer infrastructure in the Byron Shire.

There will be temporary disruptions to traffic from Wednesday 23 February to Friday 4 March during standard work hours (7am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 1pm Saturday).

Council’s Capital Works Engineer, Joshua Winter, said the work is part of Council’s ongoing inflow and infiltration project to reduce stormwater and groundwater entering the sewer during rain events, which can cause sewage overflow and damage to infrastructure and the environment.

“This work is essential to avoid pipe collapses, overflows, blockages and access issues so that we have a safe, reliable and cost-effective sewer system across the Shire,” Mr Winter said.

Council has engaged specialist contractor Interflow to carry out the rectification works.

All properties in the work area will be notified in advance by the contractor.

There will be no disruption to water or sewer services but there may be an odour when the work is being done.

Similar work is also scheduled for Byron Bay and Ocean Shores sewer catchments in coming months with the project to be finished by September 2022.
