Multiple charges after pursuits, pedestrian hit by stolen car at Tweed Heads, NSW

A man has been charged after the stolen car he was driving allegedly struck a pedestrian, following multiple pursuits in the state’s north.

About 4.50pm (Saturday 28 March 2020), a man entered a unit on Kennedy Drive, Tweed Heads, and allegedly stole a Mitsubishi Lancer. About 7.30pm, police will allege the man broke into two units on Gray Street, Tweed Heads, but left empty-handed.

Officers from the Tweed-Byron Police District were called and saw the vehicle allegedly drive through a red light at the intersection of Gray Street and Kennedy Drive.

When the driver allegedly failed to stop, police initiated a pursuit of the vehicle travelling at speeds of up to 100 km/h along Kennedy Drive.

After the car was driven through a Queensland Police border-controlled roadblock at Kirra at high speed, the pursuit was terminated due to safety concerns.

About 10pm, the man allegedly struck another man in the driveway of a home on Kennedy Drive, Tweed Heads, before again leaving the scene, ramming a police vehicle.

The injured man was taken by paramedics to Tweed Heads Hospital where he’s being treated for a fractured cheek and lacerations to his hip.

The stolen vehicle was found at Currumbin Beach where the man is alleged to have car-jacked another vehicle forcing the driver to take him to Gollan Drive, Tweed Heads.

Following extensive inquiries, officers attached to the Target Action Group (TAG) arrested a 22-year-old man at a home on Perch Place, Tweed Heads West, about 11:40pm.

The man was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station, where he has been charged with 10 offences:

  • Dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm – drive manner dangerous
  • Aggravated break and enter with intent (three counts)
  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously (two counts)
  • Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
  • Use weapon to avoid apprehension
  • Drive while unlicensed, and
  • Take and drive conveyance.

He was refused bail and appeared at Tweed Heads Local Court today (Sunday 29 March 2020), where he was remanded in custody to appear in the same court on Monday 25 May 2020.
