We’re looking forward to recognising NAIDOC Week 2020 in November.
NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year’s theme is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’, which recognises that First Nations People have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.
For the first time in the event’s 64-year history, the National NAIDOC Committee has rescheduled NAIDOC Week this year.
The decision was made to protect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders, as well as vulnerable members of the community, from potential health risks posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Planning is now underway to mark NAIDOC Week 2020 from 8-15 November and the City is excited to participate in celebrations.
In previous years, local activities have included guest presentations, photography and art installations and flag raising ceremonies.
The City will work with the Kilangitj (formerly Karreenga) Aboriginal Advisory Committee to plan appropriate celebrations in line with any health restrictions at the time.
Groups and organisations can also apply for a Community Events Grant to assist the running of an activity. Grant applications open 17 July via our grants web page.
