National housing campaign welcomes $1 billion investment in creating homes for young people with nowhere to live and women and children escaping violence

Home Time Campaign

The national youth housing campaign, Home Time, has welcomed the decision by Federal Housing and Homelessness Minister Julie Collins to dedicate the $1 billion National Housing Infrastructure Facility (NHIF) to the creation of new housing for young people, as well as women and their children escaping violence. $700 million will be available as direct grants to housing providers.

This follows a sustained campaign by over 120 organisations to secure a national pool of 15,000 dedicated tenancies for young people with linked support services, together with action to reduce the youth payments rental gap for housing providers offering homes to young people. This is the first funding announcement towards that national target.

Data released earlier this year revealed that almost 40,000 young people had approached homelessness services for assistance with almost 10,000 aged 15-17 with nowhere to live and no parental or carer support. Most troubling was the fact 44% were still homeless after receiving assistance due to a lack of dedicated youth housing.

Organisations supporting Home Time include Homelessness Australia, Community Housing Industry Association, National Shelter, Melbourne City Mission, Australian Youth Affairs Coalition, ACOSS. The Salvation Army, Anglicare Australia, Brisbane Youth Service, Foyer Foundation, YFoundations and the Australian Services Union.
