Artists from across the globe are now invited to apply for The Percivals 2024.
One of Australia’s most respected arts competitions, The Percivals is presented by Townsville City Council and is open to nationally and internationally renowned artists as well as emerging artists, competing for a share of $53,000 worth of prize money.
The biennial competition will be exhibited at Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville from 22 June to 1 September next year.
Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said The Percivals had been giving artists a platform to engage with portraiture since 2007.
“Townsville City Council has a strong focus on providing opportunities for the growth of local artists, which is why hosting The Percivals is so vital to our arts community. This competition provides a platform for Townsville artists to be exhibited alongside the world’s best, all vying for significant prize money,” Cr Greaney said.
“The three categories are the major acquisitive Percival Portrait Painting Prize worth $40,000, the major acquisitive Percival Photographic Portrait Prize worth $10,000 and the Percival Animal Portrait Prize worth $1000.
“Artists will also be competing for the $1000 People’s Choice Awards in the portrait painting and photographic prize categories.”
Cr Greaney said artists had a few months to submit their applications.
“Applications for The Percivals 2024 close at 10am AEST on Tuesday 13 February next year, with artists being advised of selection on Wednesday 13 March,” she said.
“If you are an artist head to our website and fill out the application form before the cut-off date to ensure your artwork is considered for selection.”
In 2022 Michael Lindeman won the Percival Portrait Painting Prize for his self-portrait I…, David Cossini won the Percival Photographic Portrait Prize for his digital print Double Trouble, and Eliza Dedini won the Percival Animal Portrait Prize for her acrylic work Intrinsic.
More than 340 artworks were entered into the prize in 2022, with 250 entries from 214 artists making it into the exhibition.
Perc Tucker Regional Gallery is currently exhibiting Len Cook: Fire and Rain and Ricky Emmerton: Who Flash! until Sunday 13 August. Entry is free.
Ephemera: Seaside Sculptures 2023 kicks off at The Strand next Saturday 22 July and runs until Sunday 6 August.
