I’m David, hello from the bureau with your forecast for the coming weekend, Saturday August 8th, and we’ll take a look ahead to Sunday August 9 as well.
Looking at the national map, the main feature is this strong cold front which will sweep across southern Western Australia during Saturday, bringing rain, thunderstorms, small hail, strong winds and large swell there. A windy day for the south-eastern states as well, with showers and rain across much of South Australia and reaching Victoria and northern Tasmania later. We’ll cover this system in a separate severe weather video later today, so stay tuned for that. Meanwhile, in the north, it’s another classic dry season day.
Let’s go around the grounds now, starting with Queensland, where we’ll see another cold and frosty start across the Darling Downs, then a dry, sunny day for most of the state. A few showers just about the north tropical coast. Brisbane, sunny and 24 °C.
Similar for much of New South Wales and the ACT with a cold morning, then a sunny day. Some patchy rain reaching the far west later in the day. Sydney, mostly sunny and 19 °C. Canberra, another chilly start, minus 3 °C, then up to 15 °C with plenty of sun.
In Victoria, northerly winds increasing ahead of that cold front, with rain and showers moving in from the west. Melbourne, a top of 17 °C, but it will feel colder than that with a stiff wind blowing, rain reaching the city in the late afternoon.
Tasmania will also see northerly winds picking up, with showers increasing, heaviest about the north-west and King Island. Hobart, partly cloudy, with a mild top of 15 °C. Maybe some light rain in the late evening. South Australia will also see plenty of wet weather and gusty winds.
Parts of the Pastoral Districts are likely to pick up 10 to 15 mm of rain, while for the agricultural areas, heavier totals are more likely to come during Sunday when the cold front proper moves over. Adelaide, a breezy 17 °C with showers, mainly in the morning, again with the heavier rain to come early Sunday.
Western Australia will see cold blustery south-westerly winds extending right across the southern half of the state with widespread showers. Damaging winds are likely on the coast between Albany and Esperance during the day. Thunderstorms and small hail are possible around parts of the South West Land Division. The south-westerly winds have also generated a large swell, which will impact the coast from Durian Bay right around to Esperance. We might even see some snow flurries atop Bluff Knoll. In Perth, showery, windy and the chance of a thunderstorm in the morning, reaching just 16 °C.
Heading up north, we’ll see breezy conditions for the Pilbara and a few light showers there. Elsewhere, dry and sunny conditions for the Top End. Darwin, sunny and 31 °C.
Looking ahead to Sunday, and that cold front continues to dominate the weather with showers, rain and gusty winds extending right across the south-east. Thunderstorms are possible over south-east South Australia, including for Adelaide. Damaging winds are likely about alpine parts of Victoria and New South Wales, and it will be windy right across Victoria. Substantial rain across the hills of north-east Victoria and northern Tasmania will see a risk of riverine flooding there. Brisbane, partly cloudy and 23 °C. Sydney, showers and 20 °C. Rain across Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide. Hobart, a shower or two and 16 °C. Perth, a shower or two and 17 °C. Darwin, sunny and just 29 °C there.
